Eliza Hussman Gaines

Eliza Hussman Gaines is the fourth generation of her family to be in the newspaper industry. She is the publisher of 11 daily newspapers and eight weekly newspapers across Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. Previous roles include vice president of audience development for WEHCO Media, executive editor of the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record, and executive editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. She is on the boards of the University of North Carolina Hussman School of Journalism and Media Foundation, the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation, America’s Newspapers, the CHI St. Vincent Foundation, and the Gladney Center for Adoption. She was the 2023-2024 president of the Arkansas Press Association board. She earned a B.A. in English and M.A. in Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Gaines lives in Little Rock, Ark.

On Oct. 17, the Overby Center will host a screening of “The Harvest,” a documentary film about the transformation of a small Mississippi town during desegregation. The program will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning author Douglas Blackmon, who wrote and co-produced the film.

The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics will host Ronald Collins, retired law professor and scholar, to discuss his new book on the trial of Emmett Till. The program will be Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. in the Overby Center Auditorium on the University of Mississippi campus. Collins will be discussing “Tragedy on Trial: The Story of the Infamous Emmett Till Murder Trial.”
